Why AI LinkedIn Posts Sound Like AI (And How to Fix It)

You’ve seen these posts. You’ve probably scrolled past a hundred of them this week. They start with a bold, vaguely inspirational statement. They end with “What do you think? Drop a comment below!” Every paragraph is exactly one sentence. There are exactly five bullet points. And somewhere in there, the phrase “I’m thrilled to share” makes an appearance.

We all know these posts were written by AI. The author knows we know. And yet the posts keep coming, because the alternative — actually writing something — takes time that most people don’t have.

The problem isn’t that people use AI to write LinkedIn posts. The problem is that the output is so obviously templated that it undermines whatever you were trying to say. Let’s talk about why that happens and what you can do about it.

The telltale signs everyone recognises

You don’t need a PhD in computational linguistics to spot AI-generated LinkedIn content. The patterns are remarkably consistent:

The grocery list of buzzwords. “Leveraging cutting-edge solutions to drive synergistic outcomes.” Nobody talks like this. Nobody has ever talked like this. If you said this out loud at a standup, your team would stage an intervention.

The emotional opener that feels unearned. “I’m incredibly proud to announce…” followed by something that happened to them, not something they built. The emotional register is dialled to 11 for content that warrants about a 4.

The formulaic structure. One-sentence hook. Line break. Three to five bullet points. Line break. Wrap-up that restates the hook. Line break. Question to “drive engagement.” It reads like someone filled out a form.

The hedge words. “In today’s rapidly evolving landscape…” is doing no work in that sentence. Neither is “it’s worth noting that” or “at the end of the day.” These are filler phrases that default AI output reaches for when it doesn’t have anything specific to say.

The suspicious absence of opinion. Real humans have takes. They think some things are better than other things. Default AI output is pathologically balanced — it’ll give you “on the other hand” for free, even when nobody asked.

If you’ve noticed these patterns, congratulations: you have eyes. The more interesting question is why this keeps happening.

Why default AI output sounds like a press release

When you open ChatGPT and type “write me a LinkedIn post about my latest project,” you’re asking a model that was fine-tuned to be a helpful, harmless, and honest assistant. That’s the core issue. The model isn’t trying to sound like you. It’s trying to sound like a competent assistant who is helping you.

The result is output that’s polished, grammatically perfect, and completely devoid of personality. It’s the written equivalent of a stock photo — technically competent, recognisably fake.

There’s also a training data problem. The model has seen millions of LinkedIn posts, and LinkedIn has a particular gravitational pull toward a specific register: corporate-positive, vaguely motivational, heavy on the “thought leadership” framing. The model pattern-matches to that register because that’s what LinkedIn posts look like in aggregate.

What “sounding human” actually means

When someone reads your post and it doesn’t trigger their AI detector (the one in their brain, not the SaaS product), what’s actually going on? A few things:

Specificity over generality. “We reduced our CI pipeline from 14 minutes to 3 by switching from Jest to Vitest” hits different than “We significantly improved our development workflow.” The first one sounds like a person who did a thing. The second sounds like a chatbot.

Imperfection. Real humans use sentence fragments. Start sentences with “And.” Have a slightly uneven rhythm. Throw in an aside that’s only tangentially related. The mechanical perfection of AI output is itself a signal.

Actual opinions. “I tried Kubernetes for this and it was overkill. A single VPS behind Caddy would have been fine.” That’s a human being. “Kubernetes is a powerful tool that can be beneficial in many scenarios” is a chatbot hedging.

Conversational rhythm. People write the way they talk, roughly. Short sentence. Then a longer one that unpacks the idea a bit. Then maybe a one-word paragraph for emphasis. AI output tends to be metronomically even — every sentence about the same length, every paragraph about the same weight.

None of these things are hard to achieve individually. The problem is that default AI output fights against all of them simultaneously.

Platform matters more than you think

A post that works on LinkedIn reads strangely on X. A tweet thread that pops on X would feel weird on LinkedIn. The platforms have different registers, different norms, and different audience expectations.

LinkedIn rewards a slightly more narrative structure. You can take a paragraph to set up context. People expect professional framing, but “professional” doesn’t have to mean “corporate” — it can mean “a developer explaining what they built and why it matters.”

X rewards density and personality. You have limited space, so every word has to earn its place. Hot takes perform. Nuance is a luxury.

Most AI post generators treat these platforms identically. They have one output mode — “generic social media post” — and it ends up fitting neither platform well. System prompts are the whole game

Here’s the thing most people miss: the difference between bad AI output and good AI output is almost entirely in the system prompt. The underlying model is capable of writing in nearly any voice. It just defaults to “helpful assistant” when you don’t tell it otherwise.

A well-crafted system prompt does several things:

  • It sets a specific voice and register (“write like a developer who ships code, not a marketing team”)
  • It bans the worst offender phrases (“do not use ‘excited to announce,’ ‘thrilled to share,’ ‘in today’s fast-paced world’”)
  • It specifies structural constraints (“no more than 3 bullet points, vary paragraph length, skip the engagement-bait closing question”)
  • It gives the model permission to have opinions and be specific

The difference is night and day. Same model, same prompt about your project, completely different output. One sounds like it was ghostwritten by a LinkedIn influencer bot. The other sounds like you sat down and wrote it.

But writing good system prompts is its own skill. Most people don’t want to spend an afternoon prompt-engineering their way to a decent LinkedIn post. They just want to paste a link and get something they’d actually post.
